for the opportunity
of the enemy’s defeat
to present itself.
 
A good warrior
defends against
defeat by the enemy.
 
A great warrior
assures that the enemy’s defeat
is provided by the enemy.
 
The art of protection
requires defensive tactics –

(Part 2)
The art of victory
is nourished by an aggressive spirit –
Waiting for the opportunity to manifest itself.
 
A general skilled in defensive tactics
is well skilled in the art of hiding –
Utilizing the most secret resources
available on earth.
 
A dependence on defensive tactics
demonstrates weakness.
 
A general skilled in the tactics of attack
will thunder forth from the mountain tops –
Prepared to encounter a vulnerable enemy.
 
A willingness to engage
in aggressive tactics
shows strength and confidence –
When used with planning and forethought.
 
Defensive tactics provide protection.
Aggressive tactics deliver victory.
Therefore, if the objective of war is victory,
offensive tactics are required to prevail.
 
Better to attack once and end it –
Than to win ten thousand battles!
