"The Art of Waging War"The object of war is victory,
not war itself.
An expeditious victory
is a profound blessing.
If victory is long in coming
the weapons will dull
and the soldiers will weary.
Long campaigns drain supplies –
Debilitating the army, the homeland,
and the people.
Maintaining an army
is costly to the state –
As the war lingers on,
the state weakens.
Soon, both army and nation
appear vulnerable to attack –
A protracted offensive war
quickly turns defensive
when overpowered.
Thus, the general becomes
an arbiter of the people’s fate;
Therefore, in terms of victory
let the warrior’s wisdom prevail:
Time is of the essence,
and almost never on your side.
