"Twin Towers"
I haven’t cried yet...

For the shattered glass,
twisted metal,
and mangled bodies –
Ripping through the sky
like shrapnel searing into our memories...

Forever.

Fiery images scorched deep
into our eyes, ears, and hearts;
exploding human bombs,
crumbling pillars of billowing smoke,
and final cell-phone calls –

Good-bye...

For heroic actions by the Free and the Brave;
empty, open-doored ambulances,
fire-trucks, and squad cars –
meticulously lined in rows,
covered in debris from the morning’s rain of terror.
Now monuments to the courage and self-sacrifice
of those who lie beneath them –

And those still working above.

The tears, prayers,
and strength of families,
friends, C.E.O.s, and Presidents.
The Star Spangled Banner playing in distant lands,
uniting freedom-loving people everywhere.
A nostalgic yearning for Peace –

The first and final Freedom.

I’ve seen the images,
longed to comfort and be comforted,
realized the cruel dawning of this new day –
But, I haven’t cried yet.

Too overwhelmed by the tragedy,
still numb from the horror,
and the horrors yet to come.
But, I know there is time enough for crying...

Perhaps a lifetime.
