The goal of all warfare is victory –
Not confrontation.
Therefore, victory in battle
is not the greatest outcome.
Supreme excellency consists of
breaking the enemy’s resistance –
with no need for violence.
Therefore,
Wise generals thwart the enemy’s plan.
Average generals impede the enemy’s attack.
Weak generals attack the enemy
directly on the field.
Losing generals attack the enemy
after they have already fortified.
The spirit of victory encapsulates
these essential truths:
The wise warrior respects all enemies equally –
Considering none to be superior, or inferior.
An army infused with the spirit of victory
and a conviction of purpose –
Always holds an advantage.

Is the art of strategy.
There is a time to engage –
and a time to disengage.
Politics and warfare are incompatible –
Generals must command in the field.
Warriors who know themselves
and the enemy –
Face no defeat in a hundred battles.

but not the enemy –
Will suffer a defeat for every victory.
Warriors who know neither
the enemy nor themselves –
Will never know victory.
