"Two Funerals"Two funerals today
reflecting the heart and soul
of a possibility for one nation under God,
with liberty and justice for all –
a dream still hoped for.
A celebration of courage and patriotism,
the complete self-sacrifice to God and country –
Living a life greater than himself,
by embracing a higher calling.
A warrior’s heart, in service to the ideals
and convictions that kept it beating.
A celebration of suffering and song,
the strength of endurance,
and the joy of overcoming –
She sang with a voice that soothed,
impassioned, and provoked
depending on the need.
Singing the hymns of humanity,
her soul endures for eternity.
A nation would be fortunate
to embrace either of these
great heroes as part of
their collective memory –
Yet in a single day
we remember both.
Brother and Sister,
Black and White,
Liberal and Conservative,
Heart and Soul.
Two funerals today,
memorializing the great wealth,
of our country.
